Christi Sullivan, D.M., has been a certified PADI Dive Master since May 1992. She acquired her Dive Master certification and experience working at a small dive shop in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. After a dive vacation with her husband, George, in the Lesser Antilles, Christi got her belly button pierced. Being devoted divers, Christi and George were so inspired by their vacation and Christi’s resulting body piercing that they wanted to purchase a belly button ring with the Diver Down flag.

Boaters universally recognize the Florida Diver Down flag as a warning that someone is “down” below. It also universally recognized by divers as the sign that it is okay to “go down.” Combined with the location of the jewelry on the body, it made for a wonderful double entendre.

George loved the idea and set about finding such a belly button ring. The only problem was, there was no such piece of jewelry available! They searched on-line dive shops and body jewelry shops, from Australia to San Diego, and found that the product just wasn’t made. So, George had one custom made for Christi, using the setting and ring from another piece and the flag from a tie tack. The original piece cost $350. While it looked great, it certainly wasn’t perfect.

Being an avid swimmer and diver, Christi soon realized that the belly button ring had to be created to withstand the effects of salt water and chlorine. She studied jewelry making and had the flags and rings made from 14k gold and special epoxies designed for the diver lifestyle.

Christi's design, The Florida Belly Down© ring, is the only belly button ring featuring the Diver Down flag. It is made especially for women who enjoy swimming and diving, and for men who love the look of this unique and beautiful piece of body jewelry.
